HIPAA Essentials: Safeguarding Patient Privacy in Healthcare

Front desk and clinical staff are often the first line of defense when it comes to protecting patient privacy.

Key Practices:

  • Speak quietly when confirming appointments or discussing info

  • Keep computer screens out of public view

  • Don’t leave charts or sign-in sheets out unattended

  • Use HIPAA-compliant sign-in processes

  • Shred documents with PHI before disposal

  • Don’t talk about patients in hallways, elevators, or waiting rooms

Tip: Always ask yourself — “Could anyone overhear or see something they shouldn’t?”
